        <p>With millions Americans unemployed and left without healthcare, demand for medical services has declined.  To prepare for an expected 2% drop in revenue for the third quarter of 2009, hospitals and other healthcare providers are cutting back medical staff and are covering shifts with part time nurses internally. As a result, the healthcare staffing industry is experiencing  falling demand for services.  However, negative revenue growth should be short-lived with potential healthcare reforms in the making.  Assuming the Obama Administration’s healthcare reform bill provides more reasonable healthcare to a significant portion of the 46 million uninsured and 26 million underinsured, hospital rooms and other providers will initially be flooded with patients who had been holding off on medical treatment.  To meet staffing requirements quickly, healthcare providers will outsource to staffing firms to ensure all shifts are covered, yet still avoid paying the benefits of a full-time employee. We expect 4.5% revenue growth in the fourth quarter of 2009 followed by 3.2% growth for all of 2010. </p> <p>Despite revenue growth starting in the fourth quarter of 2009, the bill-pay spread margins will not increase until the medical staff shortage begins to intensify again.  The return of the medical staffing shortage and increased patient flow signal good news for healthcare staffing companies, as they will be in high demand once unemployment falls back around 8% in the first quarter of 2011. </p> <p>With higher valuations expected once patient flow increases, M&amp;A activity should pick up in the near future.   Buyers will be looking to expand coverage and capacity in preparation for an expected rise in demand for healthcare staffing.  In particular, middle market buyers should be looking at boutique specialty medical staffing firms, while valuations are low in order to expand their scope and geographic coverage.   Once cash flows start to pick up, middle market buyers should be well positioned to finance acquisitions, as the current industry leverage ratios are a modest 1.9 on depressed earnings.</p> <p> </p>

              <p>The unemployment rate remains high as the staffing industry continues to struggle through this economic recession. For an industry with already low profit margins and sales dropping by 7.7% on an annual rate through the 1st quarter of 2009 from the fourth quarter 2008, it is proving to be another difficult year for many temporary staffing companies.  This is after an already poor 2008 performance with sales dropping by 7.7% for the entire year.  Many companies who regularly relied upon staffing firms to supply human resources are cutting these positions in an effort to reduce any unnecessary costs and fight the recession.  The Human Resources &amp; Employment Services index, down 22.7% through February 27th for 2009, is a primary indicator of the general slump in demand for labor.  Industry gross product is down another 5.1% after a 3.0% drop in revenue in 2008 to highlight the staffing industry’s struggles from the end of 2007 to present.  The near future does not show any signs of recovery as the U.S. government announces unemployment will remain at high levels after rising another.4% in April.  Temporary staffing will be the first to make a push as the economy regains health, and permanent positions will begin falling into place once the industry approaches full strength.  However, the recovery for the staffing industry will not begin until early of 2011; until then, expectations are that revenue will be down 4.3% for 2009 and another 2.2% in 2010. </p> <p>Middle market M&amp;A in the staffing industry will continue to be negligible until unemployment begins to rebound.  For those transactions that are being completed, valuations are abysmal, which is a reflection from of the distressed nature of most transactions. Once the industry starts to rebound, the industry should see fewer competitors in the market. This could have a positive influence on future valuations. </p> <p>Despite a recent surge from financial institutions, the U.S. economy suffers from a high jobless rate and a continued downfall of production.  Output fell again in the first quarter of 2009, down another 6.1% from the previous quarter.  Unemployment, which plagues 13.6 million Americans, tops a decade high unemployment rate of 8.9%.  Unfortunately, the worst is still to come for the job market; the Fed expects the jobless rate to reach 9.6% and not return to a healthy a level until 2011.  Coming out of the recession, the U.S. normal rate of unemployment is predicted to hit a new standard of 6.5%, according to Bloomberg analysts.  However, there are signs the economy has hit rock bottom and is set to move forward.  The first quarter GDP contraction of 5.7% is less severe than the 5.5% projection by many economists.  Much of the progress is attributed to the 9.6% increase in durable goods purchases.  Many economists also predict positive output growth in the third quarter of 2009.  Consumer confidence is also at its highest since September of 2008, according to the Conference Board’s sentiment index.</p>

              <p><strong>“Long-term commitment to new learning and new philosophy is required of any management that seeks transformations. The timid and the fainthearted, and the people that expect quick results, are doomed to disappointment.”</strong> &#8212; Dr. William Edwards Deming</p> <p> </p> <p>In a nutshell, the above statement characterizes what is wrong with the American automobile industry, and why we are losing market share to the Japanese.</p> <p>It’s amazing to think that Japan, a country that was bombed almost to oblivion in the Second World War, would come back in just a few decades to be a fierce economic rival. What’s even more amazing is that it is to a great extent attributable to one man –an American statistician named William Deming.</p> <p> </p> <p>After WWII, when Japan was trying to rebuild their shattered economy, they enlisted the help of Dr. William Deming, who had just come up with the 14 principles of quality. Deming theorized that committing to producing high quality products, instead of focusing on producing in large quantities, would actually reduce production costs. Lower production cost maximizes profitability, while high quality products help increase market share.</p> <p> </p> <p>Sounds like a great plan, right? Well, the Japanese agreed with Deming and immediately started implementing Deming’s ideas. On the other hand, when Deming tried to sell his ideas to American manufacturers, he was dismissed as a quack. Clearly a prophet is not appreciated in his own home! Americans are obsessed with short-term goals. How soon can we recoup our investment? How soon can we make a profit? We want quick results, instant gratification.</p> <p> </p> <p>Over the years, the Japanese built a reputation for building high quality, affordable cars. Sales were low at the beginning, but they persevered and won the public relations war on quality. American automakers made tremendous sales in the ‘50’s, ‘60’s and ‘70’s by compromising on quality, and churning out millions of cars, but they were gradually losing the quality perception war to the Japanese.</p> <p> </p> <p>Which brings us to the present-day disaster that we are facing in the American auto industry. Not a day passes without hearing on the news or reading in the papers about yet another mass layoff at an auto manufacturing plant. The Big 3 are shutting down plants across America, crippling local economies and stretching local and state budgets to the limit from decreased tax revenues and increased unemployment benefits payouts.</p> <p> </p> <p>While we hear about the smaller companies that are dependent on the Big 3 –parts suppliers, and service providers – we hardly hear about the impact on the Staffing Industry. The impact on the staffing industry may not be broadcast on nightly news, but it’s, nevertheless, there.</p> <p> </p> <p>In recent years, the Staffing Industry has generally outpaced the general economy in growth, with 2007 being a record year, when over 3 million placements. However, with the recession, decline in U.S. manufacturing and the poor fortunes of the Big 3, the Staffing Industry is leveling off.</p> <p> </p> <p>With the Big 3 being forced to tighten their belts and restructure to survive, so will the Staffing Industry be forced to adapt. Jobs in manufacturing are disappearing, so we need to re-evaluate business strategy and re-focus our niche markets. We also need to look on the positive side. For instance, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics projects that the Staffing industry will become the second-largest job-growth American industry.</p> <p> </p> <p>There are still opportunities for growth for the Staffing industry. The laid off workers still need to find alternative employment, and the economy is starting to show signs that the recession has bottomed out. Economic recovery should begin towards the end of this year, and with it increased <a rel="nofollow" onclick="javascript:_gaq.push(['_trackPageview', '/outgoing/article_exit_link']);" href="http://www.myaltusrecruiting.com/testimonials.html">job postings</a> by employers. The American Staffing Association reminds us why the Staffing Industry is resilient:</p> <p> </p> <p>One cannot over-estimate the importance of the Staffing Industry to the American economy. <a rel="nofollow" onclick="javascript:_gaq.push(['_trackPageview', '/outgoing/article_exit_link']);" href="http://www.myaltusrecruiting.com/">Job recruiters</a> are the bridge between job seekers and employers.
